Pie might not be for everyone, but believe it or not, I owned a pie business in San Francisco at one time. Well, let's just suffice it to say that I'm pretty sweet. I've always been drawn to design like a moth to a flame. I love everything about design from listening to the initial boring same old ideas that need to be tweaked and exchanged for the explosive, high energy mind blowing experience that is expected to the fine art of budgeting. There's very little that doesn't interest me.
This is where it all began. I am a graduate of Pennsylvania State University - aka, PENN STATE. We are! Upon my arrival to Penn State, I was unaware of the field of graphic design. I would soon discover its pull on my heart.
After a couple of years floundering in Pennsylvania and Ohio, I decided to take my talents to San Francisco. There I would discover fruitful employment in my field of choice. It was at once exhilarating and overwhelming. The landscape had started to evolve towards a world of animation, web, and video that had never been seen before.
My journey in San Francisco started with Homes & Land Magazine. I was a full-time designer for the first time. I would go on to be the Sr. Graphic Designer for Theme Co-op Promotions, an independent marketing agency. This quickly led to my first managerial role. I created a team that to-this-day is close and helped build really successful designers. I also helped several individuals who had no design experience become designers for Fortune 500 companies after working with me at Theme Co-op. That leadership role then took me to Gap.
Gap was a great experience which helped me to understand the inner workings of an in-house studio. As the Assistant Studio Manager, I worked hard to establish a work ethic and attention to detail that was demanded from the CEO. Working closely with leadership, we had some of the most successful campaigns in Gap's long history.
Wanting to see how far I could go, I then moved on to Symantec. As the Global Consumer and Small Business Design Manager, I was able to broaden my experience from simply B2C to B2B and beyond. I traveled to Ireland, Germany, France, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, Chile, and Brazil as a part of my role. It was an exciting time. Symantec was revitalized as the #1 security software company in the world. It was at Symantec, that I first worked directly with copywriters, web and video production. This would prove. to be key to the rest of my career.
After starting my own business, My Pie, and due to the 2008 market crash, I went back to design for Bank of the West. There I would discover how the financial industry marketed their services. Not only that, the many community efforts that often go untold. These foundational experiences led to more well rounded skills.
I would go on to work for McAfee in a globally impactful role as the Sr. Web Production Manager. This was an expansion of my initial role as the Sr. Production Manager, overseeing production of all marketing. Bringing web into my full-time role was the next step towards being the Creative Services Manager at Delta Dental of California.
At Delta Dental of California, I played a role in the branding, web, print, and communications. I had not been involved with communications in any previous roles. This opened my eyes to the importance of branding throughout an organization including HR and every day functions. This helped me to form processes, functional work flows and more that I now use to help businesses with their own challenges in marketing and branding today as a freelance designer. You just can't go wrong if you contact me.
